Art Journal - Recommendations

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 16, 2009, 7:37 PM
So, I wanted to do something a little different this time. Usually I lecture, but this time I want to recommend some resources for you all. These are things that I am learning from, greatly admire for its potential, or flat out just really think you all should see.

First up, the big one for me - Ninja Mountain, for those who don't know, is a collective of illustrators of the fantasy and science fiction field (though with great pulls from other aspects of the industry). Not too long ago they began doing a weekly podcast where they cover the big things. How hard was it to break into the industry for these amazing artists? How did they achieve a style? How did they market the portfolio? Etc etc. This is the stuff people go to school to learn. You get it for free: [link]

And for the ladies out there, are you tired of women in chainmail bikinis? Is the illustrative world a bit too testosterone driven? Some artistic friends have begun a new project that I personally think is a great thing. I'm a fan of boobs in fantasy art, sure - but there are multiple facets to this industry, and perhaps it's time to acknowledge that there are women in it for once, and that they have interests of their own: [link] Go get em, girls!

Ironically this is linked on the Ninja Mountain blog site above, but I ran into it last week as well and I found myself quickly pulled into the vast amount of good advice and tips for the freelancer out there who could use some direction: [link]

Okay, enjoy. I gotta get back to drawing dinosaurs now!

Eh, fantasy and sci-fi in general just need a nice hard kick in the pants for not coming up with any new approaches.

Lots of dinosaurs. Super neat project ;)

Depends on where you look really, I've seen a ton of variety, but it's from the guys who aren't getting the chances from the AD's as those groups are trying to stick to the "not taking chances" approach. I'm hoping they start to pick up some of that skill out there just waiting to be utilized.

Mind you most genre's need a nice kick in the pants anymore heh.

On a side note, that's a really great article. I too have felt a lot of pressure not only from the art side of the spectrum, but on the professional side, I feel I'm going to have difficulty once I get to a place I feel comfortable with opting for entertainment-related jobs. Men completely dominate most of the game and movie substance in the field, so I really hope that changes by the time I manage to snag a spot in the industry.

Many women do well in this industry, and most of them have a unique way of approaching fantasy as a whole - what we need is more of you gals out there so that it takes a firmer hold. I personally feel that such a push in the industry will help carve out a broader future for it.... and we could use it. It keeps stagnating.

We need more of you girl folk showing us guys how it's done :)

Fair enough, no one's really having fun rehashing stuff the same way, and I wonder how long it'd take for the people upstairs to get that through their heads.
:iconyrindale:
This is why I'm doing so little freelance anymore actually - just not enjoying the same ol projects. Taking on things that sounds new and fun.... but it's taking more and more to do that for me. Here's hoping they take a leap soon, we could use some fresh ideas out there :)
