Artist's Comments

So.... every year I do a New Years illustration. Here's my rules when I begin:

Nothing more than a sketch before the painting, sometimes less than that. It will need alcohol based inspiration. And it's only for fun. In other words, this is not a work picture, it's something that is potentially a throw away, never to be seen again. In this case I had a thumbnail that was meant to be something entirely different but fell through - so I pulled it out and began to twist it into something different.

While it has no pre-defined story, I've formed one in my own head after completing it. I'd love to hear what story you guys get from it :)

The technical crap: Photoshop 7, mostly default brushes - with some grungy ones thrown in for flavor. Spent nearly 10 hours total. I DO have the ability to do a walk-through of this, but I'll only do it if there's a lot of interest. I'm lacking time at the moment so it becomes one of those many things on my list of "could happen some day". These things get higher on the list depending on if people let me know they want it to exist.

None the less, don't put much stock in this image, crits will likely not be applied unless they're really juicy, and I wouldn't expect a print run. This one's just for fun :)

Oh wow, I really like this one, Yrindale! I'm used to seeing you do large ogres and big muscular dudes. It's nice to see two willowy people. And I think that woman is the most beautiful one you've painted to date, both her facial features and her costume. Lovely!

Thanks Haku!

Of big emphasis for me right now is faces - I feel that it has been a weak point of mine for awhile and I'm finally of the skill set to finally really iron it out. I did reference her face to try and set up my proportions - it helped a ton. Not to mention this was a big excuse to do just about anything I wanted with costuming due to the fact that genre wise it's all a giant mixing pot :). Learned a lot in this!

Expect far more from me than the usual conan with monsters theme this year .

I've got a weird story that I'm seeing in my head for this one. Really love the use of reds and browns. Gives it a very steampunk/magic feeling.

...and THAT is where babies come from.
